Phase by phase
- SetFive-out spacing with the big at the top. Wings stay wide so nobody can help off them.
- Ball screenThe big sets the ball screen. The guard waits one beat for the screen to land.
- Back screenA second player sets a back screen on the big's defender as he drops.
- RollThe big rolls to the rim off the back screen with his hands up.
- LobThe guard throws the lob to the rim, not to the big's chest.
- DunkFinish above the rim. A catch below it invites a foul or a block.
- ScoreIf the lob is taken away, the guard reads the weak-side shooter.
When to run it
- Your five can finish a lob and catch on the move.
- The other team drops its big in ball-screen coverage.
- You want a halfcourt set that gives the guard a live dribble and two reads.
Coaching points
- The back screener sets his feet before the ball handler turns the corner. A late back screen is a moving screen.
- The roller cuts to the rim, not to the ball. The lob is thrown to where he will be.
- The ball handler keeps the dribble alive until the back screen lands.
Counters
- Defense: Switch the back screen
- Answer: The screener seals the smaller defender and the guard looks for the post entry.
- Defense: Hedge and recover high
- Answer: Set the back screen earlier so the roller is already behind the hedge.
