Moving a playbook is the kind of job people put off for three seasons. It is not the drawing that scares you. It is the idea of losing 200 plays because of a file format. This checklist is for coaches who are weighing it. It starts with what to do inside FastDraw, because that is where your data lives.

A note on where we stand. We make a competing product, so read this with that in mind. Where we talk about FastDraw, we link our source and give the date. Facts are as of October 2026.

Before you decide

  • Find your renewal date. Do not let it pass while you are still deciding.
  • Get the price in writing. FastDraw is sold through Hudl, and per a September 2026 HoopBrief analysis, it no longer shows a public price. The last public price we found was $149.99 to $199.99 a year in early 2025. Ask your rep for the current figure and what renewal costs.
  • Check who else uses your licence. If an assistant coach has their own copy, you need to move both.

What FastDraw does well

Be fair to it. FastDraw has a mature scouting suite, FastScout, and a play library of roughly 10,000 plays. If you lean on either, test whether you can live without them. Our library is smaller at launch. If you work in a program already on Hudl, there may be a real benefit to keeping the tools together.

Get your plays out first

  1. Export everything to files you own: PDFs and images at minimum, and videos if you made them. Check what your version allows.
  2. Put them in one folder, with the season in the folder name.
  3. Open five at random. Make sure the PDF opens and the lines are readable.
  4. Do this before you touch anything else. You can start with Hoops ClinIQ after.

Rebuild the plays you still run

Hoops ClinIQ does not import from other tools. You redraw the plays you still run, which is also the moment to rename them and drop the ones you never call. Start with your ten most-used sets and expect it to take an evening or two.

For plays you do not need to edit, such as old sets you only want to keep, attach the PDF to a play card. Plays you still run are worth redrawing, and the photo-to-play beta helps with ones you have on paper.

Clean up while you move

  • Rename plays the way your team says them. If your players call it "Fist", it should not be "Set 14B".
  • Group plays by what they beat: man, zone, press, BLOB, SLOB.
  • Delete duplicates. Most playbooks hold several copies of the same five sets.
  • Pick ten plays to publish to players first. The rest can wait.

Run both for one stretch

Do not cancel the day you start redrawing. Keep both for a few weeks of practice. Run a scrimmage using the new playbook on a phone. Ask your assistant to find a play on the sideline. If the new tool is slower in the gym, you learn that before the season starts.

Then cancel on purpose

Cancel before the renewal date, and keep your exported files in at least two places. If you pay by the year, put the next renewal in your calendar so it cannot surprise you again. Hoops ClinIQ's Free plan holds 10 plays and has no card on file. The app is invitation-only while it is in preview, and the free play library needs no account. Pilots run during the spring and summer 2027 club season.

If something in this list is wrong or out of date, write to us and we will correct it. For the side-by-side comparison with sources, see the FastDraw comparison page.

Your next game plan starts with your own film.

We load your plays and tag one of your games by hand. Your staff and players use ClinIQ and quizzes for four weeks. Or start with the free play library: no account.
